I remember the first Live Aid concerts. They were held July 13, 1985.
One was at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, and the other was in Wembley Stadium in London.
The lineups included U2, Duran Duran, a reunited Led Zeppelin (with drummer Jason Bonham), a reunited Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne, Run DMC, Joan Baez and the Boomtown Rats with Live Aid organizer Sir Bob Geldof.
Phil Collins played Wembley and then flew to Philadelphia to play JFK.
According to various music Web sites, Live Aid raised $245.4 million for famine relief in Ethiopia. About 162,000 people, combined, attended the shows, and nearly 1.5 billion viewers from 100 countries watched the TV broadcast.
This year, Geldof developed Live 8, a worldwide concert event, coinciding with the arrival of world leaders for the G8 summit that begins Wednesday in Gleneagles, Scotland. Live 8 will raise awareness of poverty in Third World countries, especially in Africa.
