COLUMBUS, Ohio — Greg Andrulis was fired on Tuesday as coach of the Columbus Crew, who have the worst record in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference a year after winning the conference title.
Assistant Robert Warzycha will lead the team on an interim basis. The Crew are 4-10-2 and have scored just 13 goals, tied with the expansion Real Salt Lake for fewest goals.
"Clearly our results to date have not been acceptable for our organization or our fans," general manager Mark McCullers said. "We just don't have a championship mentality. We just don't have a championship environment right now."
Andrulis has been with the team eight years and took over as coach during the 2001 season after Tom Fitzgerald was fired. Andrulis' record is 49-43-32.
After going 12-5-13 last year, including an 18-game regular-season unbeaten streak, the Crew lost in the first round of the playoffs.
In 2001, Andrulis took over after a 1-3-2 start. The Crew went 12-4-4 the rest of the season and lost in the first round of the playoffs to San Jose.
The Crew won the U.S. Open Cup in 2002, beating the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0. But the Crew have not done well in the MLS playoffs.
Andrulis, a former Crew assistant and goalkeeper coach, spent 12 seasons at Wright State (134-72-28.)
