Philadelphia-based Comcast has announced enhancements to its residential broadband speed tiers.

The new faster speeds, which are expected to be available in Utah by the end of summer, are 8Mbps/768kbps and 6Mbps/384kbps.

This is the third time Comcast has raised broadband speeds since October 2003, representing a more than 400 percent increase in downstream speeds in less than two years. The new speeds are designed to let customers more easily share photos and video, stream or download music and download online games.

Comcast said the speed increases will be automatic, meaning customers are not required to download any special files or upgrade their connections.

Comcast is delivering the 6Mbps speed to customers who also subscribe to its Standard or Digital Cable services at no additional charge. Those customers also will have the option of jumping to 8Mbps for only $10 per month more. Comcast High-Speed Internet customers who do not subscribe to a Comcast standard programming package can opt for the faster speeds of 6Mbps/384kbps for $10 more per month or can select the 8Mbps/768kbps tier for $20 more per month.
