It was disheartening to open the paper on Monday morning and discover that Independence Day was barely mentioned. A small flag icon does not represent my appreciation to our forefathers and all those men and women that have sacrificed for my right to be free. What of the heroes and patriots of today? I want my three boys to grow up understanding that their freedom did not come free. I want them to feel a responsibility as citizens to do their part in keeping the values that this country was built upon. Independence Day is not about fireworks and food. It is a day to remind all of us of the incredible country we have the privilege of living in.
