On Sept. 11, 2002, memorials took place around the world marking the one-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. The "Rolling Requiem" featured Mozart's Requiem sung by choirs in 22 time zones, each beginning at 8:46 a.m. local time, to coincide with the time of the first attack on the World Trade Center.
The Salt Lake-based choir Jubilate was the local sponsor of the event. Since then, the group has continued to commemorate 9/11 with a performance of the Requiem each Sept. 11. The tradition continues this year. And as in the past three memorials, anyone interested in singing with Jubilate is welcome to join them for the performance.
Response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, according to Jane Schaefermeyer, the ensemble's vice president. "We had 60 people join us last year. Some of the people came as far away as Logan and Spanish Fork."
Jubilate is now looking for people who want to join the choir for this year's performance. Most of those who have sung with them in the past have some sight-reading ability, but that isn't a requirement. Schaefermeyer said. "We don't turn anyone away."
The first rehearsal is Monday at 7 p.m. in the Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, 200 S. 700 East. There will be four rehearsals and one dress rehearsal.
Choir artistic director Harry Heightman will conduct, and among the soloists will be alto Gwen Schamel, tenor Ray Davis and bass Judd Sheranian.
Unlike previous performances, there will be a chamber-orchestra accompanying the singers this year. "We're going to have string players from Jack Ashton's Young Artists Chamber Players," Schaefermeyer said. "There will also be some members from the West Valley Symphony. And our timpanist is from Juan Diego High School."
Schaefermeyer hopes there will be a large turnout of interested singers at Monday's rehearsal. "It's been really successful, and we've always had a great response, because I think people are still raw with grief over what happened."
She added that doing the Mozart Requiem on the anniversary of the attacks is a poignant memorial to those who lost their lives.
