An East Chicago, Ind., bank that was robbed by gangster John Dillinger in 1934 has been demolished to make way for a drugstore.

Paul Myers, the city's historic preservation officer, said he was upset but powerless to stop the demolition of the First National Bank building.

The neoclassical building, built in 1929, had problems that would have made restoration prohibitive, said Gloria Gayle, vice president of National City Bank, which owned the building until five years ago. She acknowledged the old building had an emotional tug for longtime employees.

Walgreens spokeswoman Tiffani Bruce said that while she was not familiar with the details of the building, not all of the chain's drugstores are "cookie cutter" and the company does try to use older buildings.
