Lindsay R. Curtis, M.D. 1916 ~ 2006 ST. GEORGE, UT - Dr. Lindsay R. Curtis died Friday, January 6, 2006, of congestive heart failure. He was born May 23, 1916 to Alexander R. and Genevieve R. Curtis in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Marjorie Shepard in the Salt Lake Temple May 31, 1939. After earning his B.A. from the University of Utah, he then earned his M.D. from the University of Colorado in 1942. He was the first resident in OB-GYN in the newly established four year medical school at the University of Utah. At the time of his discharge, Dr. Curtis was serving in the Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed Gen-eral Hospital as Chief of the Women's Surgical Section. With Drs. Vernon L. Ward and Vernal Johnson, he established the Ogden Women's Clinic that grew to include six doctors, all of whom specialized in OB-GYN. He served as president of the Ogden Surgical Society and president of the Utah State OB-GYN Society. He received the A.H. Robins Achievement Award for Pubic Service. Former patients will recall that he was always available and welcomed their phone calls anytime, day or night. Other achievements included serving as an alternate member of the Utah Board of Pardons, several statewide committees for the Governor, and editor of the Utah State Medical Journal. Dr. Curtis wrote many editorials for various medical magazines. He also authored several 21/2 minute talk books. The subjects were inspired by many of his own personal experiences and are still used today. One of many popular books he wrote is Pregnant and Lovin' It. For many years, he authored a nationally syndicated newspaper column "For Women Only." He unselfishly traveled widely to lecture for the American Cancer Society, as well as for his church. Dr. Curtis served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Switzerland and Germany. He later served with his wife, Marjorie, as president of the California Oakland Mission. Twice called as bishop, he also served as a member of the Sunday School General Board. Other than his love for family, church, people, and medicine, Dr. Curtis relished two other hobbies, fishing and construction. When fishing, he unselfishly spent most of his time helping everyone else get set up and teaching others how to fish. He made it fun for all, yet somehow he always seemed to catch the most fish! As for construction, he built two mountain cabins, from start to finish (not bad for a physician). Dr. Curtis is survived by his wife, Marjorie Shepard Curtis, of St George, UT; five children, Elbert (Caroline), of Houston, TX, Dr. Mark (Denise), of Mesa, AZ, Dr. Lindsay (Kathy), of Ogden, UT, Karen Frko-vich, of Salt Lake City, UT, Colleen (Clifford V.) Dunn, of St. George, UT; 23 grandchildren; and 53 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Elder/Dr. LeGrand R. (Pat) Curtis, of Salt Lake City, UT. Dr. Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, six brother, and two sisters. To my loving husband, our wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, we love you and will miss you very much. The family would like to thank Hospice Alliance, and especially, Connie, for the wonderful care they gave to Dr. Curtis and his wife. Funeral services will be held Wednesday January 11, 2006, 11 a.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel. Friends may call to greet the family from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services, at the Mortuary.
