LEHI — The winner of last year's "Modest Prom Dress Contest" is justly proud of teens who choose the conservative path.
"Plunging necklines, bare midriffs and sleeveless tops may be beautiful to the world, but my modest clothing makes me shine," said Sarah Kator of Meridian, Idaho. "Modesty isn't imprisoning; it's empowering," Kator said in the essay she wrote to accompany her design.
Kator isn't alone in her opinion, say Eddie and Heather Gist, the owners of the company that sponsors the annual show and contest.
"Modest by Design" is a clothing company that specializes in fashionable, modest clothing at reasonable prices, including casual as well as elegant, formal wear.
"Our company idea came about when we discovered how truly difficult it is to find modest, beautiful clothing in the most stores today," Eddie Gist said. "We found in talking to other people that we were not the only ones having this problem, that many people do value modesty today, and that their needs are not being met. We hope we make shopping for modest clothing easier and a lot more fun."
The fashion show on Saturday, Jan. 7 will feature new spring and prom fashions and the winner of the Modest Prom Dress Contest will be announced. (Those interested in submitting designs for the next annual contest can find details on the company's Web site.)
