PROVO — A man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend Monday night remains in custody in the Utah County Jail on $750,000 cash-only bail.
Keith Lamont Morton, 50, appeared in 4th District Court Tuesday morning for a bail hearing. At the hearing, he apologized for the alleged crime.
"I'm really sorry about what I did, that's all I can say," Morton said, via video screen from the Utah County Jail.
Morton, who was arrested and booked into jail for investigation of murder, was taken into custody after a 20 minute stand-off with police in a home at 1183 W. 680 South in Orem.
Just before 8 p.m., 40-year-old Tonja Marie Nash was shot twice in the back with a shotgun, once at close range, said Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards.
Nash had recently moved from Arizona to Utah with her two sons, after meeting Morton on the Internet, said Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards.
Nash was still breathing when officers took her to Timpanogos Regional Medical Center, where she died from the gunshot wounds.
The woman's two children are now in the custody of their father, who arrived from Arizona Tuesday morning.
Morton will have a felony first appearance in court on Oct. 24.
