Sen. Patrice Arent's bill that would allow school employees to become members of school community councils was revived on the Senate floor Tuesday, when it was reconsidered and passed under suspension of the rules.

SB49 was recalled after members of the PTA lobbied senators to get them to change their votes. Originally, senators were worried the bill would take power away from parents and give it to the school administrations.

"The parents are the ones asking for this, and I don't think they'd do anything that goes against their own interests," South Cottonwood Democrat said.

The bill would only allow people working six hours a day or fewer to join the councils, and they can't be employees of the school district. It is basically drafted for those who are taking what would be volunteer positions but must be paid because of school policy.
