BRETT SOMMERVILLE, Bingham: This senior picked the perfect opportunity to make the hoop shot of his life.

Sommerville's 8-foot jumper at the buzzer lifted Bingham to a 61-59 victory over rival Riverton in last weekend's Class 5A championship game.

"Brett was shooting the ball no matter what because he's the best player in the state of Utah," said Bingham coach Mark Dubach.

Sommerville finished the tournament averaging 10.5 points and was named the Deseret Morning News tournament MVP. In a quarterfinal win over American Fork, Sommerville led all scorers with 20 points.

For the entire season, the Bingham point guard finished with an 11.0 scoring average.

DELYSE DOWNEY, Orem: This junior was asked to change positions a few games into the basketball season and her attitude and leadership helped lead the Tigers to the Class 4A championship.

"When we started the season, we had her at the 2 spot," said coach Ross Reid. "Four games in, we were struggling, and I went to her and said I needed her to play point guard."

Downey went from an occasional contributor to the floor general.

"She came a long way," Reid said. "When Delyse did well, we did well."

A people-lover with a goofy sense of humor, Downey had to learn to cast aside her quiet on-the-court nature and let her teammates know what they needed to do to win.
