The Utah Division B boys lacrosse title appears to be headed north — as in Cache Valley.
Though there are plenty of good teams up and down the Wasatch Front, the three schools in Cache County appear to be the best.
Logan coach Doug Ringle, who helped bring the sport to the state's northernmost schools a few years ago, said his team has plenty of experience and talent needed to challenge for a state crown.
"I see the Logan Grizzlies playing for the hardware on May 20," Ringle confidently predicted. "We will have our toughest test against Sky View . I would guess that will be for first and second place."
While the Grizzlies may be the team to beat at the moment, schools like Woods Cross and Northridge will have something to say about who gets hardware at the end of May."
The Knights have players from Layton, Roy, Davis and Northridge on the roster as the sports grows in northern Davis County. But that hasn't stopped the team from finding success.
"All of the kids have come together to see themselves as Knights, regardless of their home school. Northridge is just a name for the team," Northridge coach Mont Anderson said. "We are 3-3 right now with a tough schedule ahead of us, but I feel we have a very good shot at finishing 6-6."
Woods Cross coach Todd Anderson has a few college-bound players on his roster and hopes to factor into the playoff chase.
BOX ELDER: After opening the season with a couple of wins, things have gone downhill for the Bees. Coach Fred Witesman's squad is struggling to score points, but Derek Hatfield and Zach Egen have put the ball in the net a few times this year. Dustin McGowan is seeing lots of shots fired his direction in goal but has made nearly 100 saves this year.
FREMONT: The Silverwolves have shown some good signs so far but have no wins to show for the effort. Bryan Dedrick and Matt Weimer are the top goal producers for the Wolves, and coach Jeffrey Weimer has given Taylor Adam and Daniel Goldsberry split time as the team's goalie. But Fremont has yet to score more than four points in a game, and the playoffs are not a likely destination.
LOGAN: The Grizzlies are a family team. Coach Doug Ringle has two sons playing this year, and the team is off to a great start. Ranked near the top of the Division B standings, Logan is poised to make a big run into the playoffs. Led by Sid Thompson, Jordan Brown and Andrew Ringle on offense, the Grizz are able to score points when needed. Lance Lundberg is seeing most of the time as the goal keeper, while Mike Cristoffersen and Parker Jeppesen are the top defenders.
MOUNTAIN CREST: The Mustangs are paced by David Lopez, who leads the team in goals and assists. Keenan Nuehwring and Derek Labrum are also scoring well, while Clay Underwood has an impressive save percentage as the keeper. But the Mustangs, coached by Jessie Lopez, are struggling to win games and have a tough schedule ahead of them. Reaching the playoffs will be a challenge.
NORTHRIDGE: The Knights, coached by Mont Anderson, have players from Roy and Layton on the roster and have had an up-and-down season. They have big wins over struggling programs fueled by the scoring of Garrett Bright and Adam Stettler. But in lopsided losses, goalie Kenny Spiers has received little goal support. With support from players like Matt Welch, Austin Johnson and Todd Netto, Northridge could surprise a few teams and push for the playoffs.
SKY VIEW: The Bobcats have one of the top programs in the top half of the state, and coach Jonathon Atwood's team has had two blowout wins in recent weeks against division foes. Bryce Kendrick, Teddy Reck and Max Allen are scoring, and Curtis Hansen is cleaning things up well as the goalie.
WEBER: Coach Jeff Pendergast has his Warriors challenging for a playoff berth. With a balanced offense, Weber is taking advantage of goalie Darren Lee's netminding skills. Levi Johnson, Kyle Shaw and the brother duo of Corey and Clint Calder are putting the ball in the net on offense.
WOODS CROSS: The Wildcats have a solid team with a handful of players looking to take their game to the college level next year. Senior keeper Brad King intends to play for Georgia Tech. Alex Harding will give it a go at BYU, and Chad McCombs will suit up for Utah State. Sophomores Nate Gardner and Quintin Parry are also quality players.
