OREM — A fire in Orem on Monday afternoon looked a lot bigger than it really was, thanks to some burning fiberglass that created an enormous plume of black smoke.

The fire broke out at the abandoned Classic Skating Center and Water Slides facility at 250 S. State about 5:30 p.m. It spread quickly, consuming dead grass and trees on the site before reaching the old water slides and creating the billowing smoke.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters who responded to the scene said the smoke made the fire look worse than it was and posed no major hurdles in extinguishing the blaze. Sixteen firefighters responded, using one aerial truck and two engines to put the fire out.

At one point, the flames threatened a building to the west of the park, but crews were able to contain the blaze and extinguish it by about 7:30 p.m.
