CANSECO SEEKS TRADE: Only one game into his comeback, Jose Canseco has asked to be traded because of family obligations. Golden Baseball League commissioner Kevin Outcalt said Wednesday that negotiations were expected to be completed soon to send Canseco from the independent San Diego Surf Dawgs to the Long Beach Armada. Canseco asked for a trade because his daughter will be spending the rest of the summer living with him, and he will need to be in the Los Angeles area more than he anticipated, Outcalt said.

STARS SIGN HALPERN, BARNABY: The Dallas Stars signed free agents Jeff Halpern and Matthew Barnaby on Wednesday, the team's first significant moves since the high-profile departures of Jason Arnott and Bill Guerin. Halpern, a center who was Washington's captain last season, signed a four-year deal. Barnaby, a winger who led Chicago in penalty minutes, agreed to a one-year contract.

SABRES SING SPACEK:Jaroslav Spacek agreed Wednesday to a three-year contract worth about $10 million with the Buffalo Sabres, a team looking to bolster its depleted defensive ranks.

COYOTES SIGN LARAQUE:The Phoenix Coyotes signed rugged right winger Georges Laraque to a two-year contract on Wednesday. Laraque, 29, played the past eight seasons for Edmonton and led the Oilers in penalty minutes five times.

MCDONALD SIGNS WITH DUCKS: Andy McDonald, who led the Anaheim Ducks in assists and game-winning goals last season, signed a three-year contract on Wednesday to stay with the team. The 28-year-old center played in all 82 regular-season games for the Ducks, finishing tied for 20th in the NHL with a career-high 85 points.

FC DALLAS SIGNS HISLOP: Shaka Hislop, a goalkeeper for Trinidad and Tobago at the World Cup, signed Wednesday with FC Dallas of Major League Soccer. "This is an exciting new challenge for me," Hislop said. "I went to school in the United States and have a lot of respect for soccer in the country." The 37-year-old Hislop, who attended Howard University in Washington, played two games at the World Cup in Germany — a goalless tie against Sweden and a 2-0 loss to England.

REAL MADRID HIRES CAPELLO: Real Madrid will hire Fabio Capello as coach, the team confirmed Wednesday, a day after he resigned from troubled Italian soccer champion Juventus. Capello, who led Real Madrid to the 1997 league title, resigned from Juventus on Tuesday, and incoming president Ramon Calderon followed by saying he would hire him. The same day, an Italian prosecutor asked a sports tribunal to demote the team to Serie C or lower and strip the team of the Serie A titles it won in the past two seasons for its role in Italy's match-fixing scandal.

PLAY-BY-PLAY TO END: The American Forces Network is getting out of the sports play-by-play business on the radio. The Department of Defense said Wednesday that the network will discontinue broadcasting live games later this summer. The decision was made based on worldwide audience surveys of military members and civilian employees stationed overseas who prefer watching sports over listening.
