SOUTH JORDAN— Nobody cares how pretty it looks. There are no style points on a scoreboard. All No. 1-ranked Lone Peak and coach Mike LaHargoue knows is that his team walked away with a 1-0, double-overtime win over Bingham Tuesday afternoon.

"I thought that Bingham did a very good job of taking us out of playing our best game," LaHargoue said. "They exposed some stuff on us that we will have to work on, but even with all that, we'll take the win any day."

On paper, it may have looked like a mismatch coming in. Lone Peak had been destroying opponents averaging six-and-half goals in its three wins. Bingham, on the other hand was 0-3 to start the year. But upon closer inspection, the Miners were much better than their record. Bingham lost to No. 3 Brighton, second-ranked Alta and fifth-ranked Davis, and had been competitive in each.

"Don't let the record fool you," said LaHargoue even before kickoff, "that is a very good soccer team."

Bingham played to the coach's expectations. The Miners actually controlled much of the play in the middle of the field. Tasha Aiono and Brenna Sandquist were stringing together passes and distributing up the wings and to forwards LaChere Anglin and Jessica Heninger. The combinations were working as Bingham created several quality scoring chances. Unfortunately for the Miners, Lone Peak had goalkeeper Hailey Brown.

Brown thwarted everything thrown her way. She stopped a couple of close-range blasts, and scooped up every shot taken from farther away. Her play was so good, that on a couple occasions, she not only stopped a tough shot, but held onto the ball when there were some Bingham players ready to tap in any rebound.

"Hailey made some nice saves for us," added LaHargoue. "She really stayed focused for us the whole time. It has been tough for her in the other games, but she was ready for everything today."

Bingham countered with some stellar play in goal of its own by freshman keeper Cheyanne Mulcock. She stopped everything coming her way as well. She stopped a one-on-one chance by one of the state's leading forwards in Lauren Hair, and came out off her line strong on several occasions to knock away the ball from onrushing attackers.

For 80 minutes, neither team could find the net. Both, however, found the crossbar as Bingham thought it had a go-ahead goal in the 48th minute when Hailey McKee's strike looked to be true before crashing off the bar, and Lone Peak was stoned by the woodwork on Hair's shot in the 65th minute.

It wasn't until the 96th minute that Shantel Flanary ended the game with a "golden goal." She hustled in a ball that looked to be going to the keeper, but the ball took a funniy bounce and gave Flanary just enough time to get a piece of the ball at the same time as the keeper. The ball bounced straight in front of her and she slotted it in for the Lone Peak win.
