Throughout the summer, the Deseret Morning News will be publishing the state's top prep sports performances on record in the weekly Utah Valley Life section each Thursday.

The online prep records — which can be found at www.deseretnews.com/preprecords — is a joint effort between the newspaper and the Utah High School Activities Association to compile and preserve the top prep sports marks.

Neither the Deseret Morning News nor the UHSAA researches top performances but rather collects and publishes them. Athletes, coaches, administrators, parents and fans can submit records applications to the UHSAA, which reviews and approves qualifying applications.

Application forms (.pdf files) can be found at the Deseret News' Web site or online with the association at www.uhsaa.org. Applications must be filled and signed by applicants and school officials and need to be accompanied by proper documentation.

Listings are divided by sport and category.

Each category allows for up to the 10 best performances submitted to date (except for listings of multi-year individual champions in sports like cross country, tennis and wrestling).

Some records listings are incomplete — lacking opponent, date and such. Individuals are encouraged provide updated, correct information for incomplete listings.

So, watch these pages for the sports, the categories and the performances and see if you know someone who deserves to be listed among "the best on record." Then go to www.deseretnews.com/preprecords to download the application form.
