An LDS soldier died Aug. 28 while serving in Iraq.
A non-combatant medical complication is cited as the cause of death for U.S. Army Specialist Matthew Evan Schneider, 23.
A government report said Spc. Schneider suffered a fatal heart attack, according to his father, Andrew Schneider.
Brother Schneider remembers his son as a high-tech whiz who built his own computer when he was a child.
"He was incredibly swift... he just loved computers," Brother Schneider said.
Besides his technical acumen, Spc. Schneider will be remembered for his compassion and his strong sense of humor.
"Matthew really watched out for people, was quick to phone if he heard anyone was suffering, and had even made a home video for his stepmother when her battle with cancer worsened," read a section of Spc. Schneider's obituary posted on a family web site.
Spc. Schneider was born in Show Low, Ariz., and graduated from New Hampshire's Gorham High School in 2001. He attended New Hampshire Community College before enlisting in the army in 2003.
Brother Schneider said his son and the military made for a good fit. Specialist Schneider was proud to be serving in Iraq and believed in his mission, his father added. The U.S. Army awared Spc. Schneider with several medals — including the Bronze Star Medal.
Specialist Schneider's last home ward was the Kaysville 8th Ward, Kaysville Utah Central Stake. He had planned to tour Europe, finish college and marry following his tour of duty. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Cynthia and Mark Tardiff; father, Andrew Schneider; along with a sister, Sarah Gray, and four stepbrothers. His stepmother, Karen Schneider, preceded him in death earlier this year. Specialist Schneider was buried with full military honors Sept. 7 at Arlington National Cemetery.
