BRIGHAM CITY — A loud explosion destroyed a small storage building at the 20,000-acre ATK Launch Systems Promontory facility Friday.

No one was injured in the 3:30 p.m. explosion and fire at the building, which stores laboratory-size samples of explosive materials, said ATK spokeswoman Melodie Deguibert.

"It wasn't a propellant for the space shuttle; these were materials used for research and development," she said.

The fire was quickly contained by the company's onsite fire department, and a hazardous materials team determined there is no danger from chemicals, she said.

It will likely be a number of days before the cause of the explosion, she said.

"It's not a building that normally has any people inside," she said. "It has controlled entry. ... The people who have access go through extensive training."

ATK, formerly Thiokol, has been located about 25 miles west of Brigham City since 1958. Alliant Technology Systems produces advanced weapons and space systems, along with munitions and rocket motors. The company, headquartered in Edina, Minn., has about 15,000 employees and operations in 22 states.
