The State Board of Education has new leadership.

Board member Richard Sadler of Ogden succeeds Kim Burningham of Bountiful as chairman of the education board, which sets policy affecting more than a half million Utah schoolchildren.

Board member Mark Cluff of Alpine will replace Janet Cannon of Holladay as vice chairman.

Sadler is dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Weber State University and former president of the Utah School Boards Association.

Cluff founded a software company, Wilcox Associates, in 1990 but retired when he was elected to the board a few years ago.

Burningham and Cannon, the leadership team for seven years, still are board members.

As chairman, Burningham was often seen on Utah's Capitol Hill, where the schools' $3 billion budget is set. He also spoke out against government vouchers for private school tuition, a never-implemented law voters defeated last month.

The state board elected its new leaders last week.
