THE REVIEW
Game play: Think of Gabe Logan as the super-secret action agent you can take anywhere.
The "Syphon Filer" series has been the hallmark of super-spy stealth play for the PlayStation 2 and for the PSP. "Syphon Filer: Dark Mirror" became one of the best special-ops action games for the PSP. Now "Logan's Shadow" picks up the pace and makes some improvements.
The gripping storyline, creative levels and missions, and array of control options make "Logan's Shadow" a great escape into a world of spy intrigue and gun-blazing action.
For those who like a game with simple controls, this one may be a challenge. The game takes advantage of almost every control button on the PSP, which may take a bit to get used to. The thumb stick controls Logan's forward-backward and side-to-side movements, while the four side buttons control the tilt and turn. Shoulder buttons are used for weapons, and the directional pad opens up equipment menus.
Once you've hurdled the learning curve, it's time to get into the game, which is packed with action. Some missions rely on stealth and sneaking past guards to accomplish goals, so running in with guns blazing won't really work.
The superb level design puts you in various locations, including under water.
And don't forget this game comes with a wide variety of multiplayer options, including linking up with other PSPs.
Graphics: Graphics in "Logan's Shadow" are some of the best I've seen on the PSP, capturing the mood of suspense and danger. A variety of features, such as night vision goggles and sniper scopes, also add a nice dimension.
Audio: Given all of the game's features, its audio is arguably the weakest. Sounds of firearms and other weapons are pretty crisp, but the music is pretty mundane. The character voice acting is also sub-par.
THE WRAP UP
Parent's Take: With plenty of shooting, language and other violence, this game is definitely not for younger players.
Final word: With a gripping story, great level design and plenty of action, "Logan's Shadow" proves to be one of the best special-ops games for the PSP.
