Jun Oniki 1923 ~ 2007 Our kind, gentle, and beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, and friend Jun Oniki, age 83, passed away at home surrounded by family March 17, 2007. Jun was born April 21, 1923 in Corrine, Utah to Toichi and Shima Oniki. He was the youngest of three boys. Jun graduated from West High School and received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from the University of Utah. He taught in Salt Lake City School District and was the first Japanese principal in Utah. He married Mary Takaki, and has two daughters, Rene and Joy. He was also a "father" to his niece, Linda; and nephews, Jerry and Ron. Jun loved to bowl and he was famous for his delicious homemade pies. Jun was a strong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings, including serving a mission with Mary to Kobe, Japan in 1989-1991. He taught us through example of his testimony of Jesus Christ. Jun was known for his sense of humor, dignity, integrity, kindness, and gentle manner. Survived by wife, Mary; Rene Eldredge, daughter (Mark); Joy Strong, daughter (Steven); Jerry Okabe, nephew (Shizuka); Linda Okabe, niece; Ron Okabe, nephew; 14 grandchildren; and brother, Dr. Dan Oniki (Helen). We love you, Dad, and you will be missed! The family would like to thank the staff at IHC Hospice for all their loving care and support. Particularly Mike and Sunny. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday March 21, 2007, at the Cottonwood 1st Ward, 7075 South 2250 East in SLC. Friends and family are invited to call Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery.
