SPRINGVILLE — If you have an unusually shaped spa, chances are the cover came from Cedar Mountain Manufacturing.
Owner Casey Warren took a leap of faith more than two years ago, jumping from the computer industry where he worked on software for banks, to banking on his own business, which he bought from the family that founded the Cedar Mountain name in Colorado 25 years ago.
In a small industrial complex just off Main Street, the tiny business with just eight employees claims at least 70 percent of the Utah market. As spa designs get stranger, Warren follows with a foam-centered, vinyl cover to match.
"We cut the foam to fit the design of the spa," he said.
Then his employees seal it in plastic, and contract seamstresses create the outer cover. The company makes thousands of covers every year in a variety of shapes, even simple rectangular ones.
"We work with most major spa dealers in Utah," he said.
While weird covers may be a specialty and normal covers a mainstay, the former software engineer has come up with another "softwear" product — giant bean bags. The largest fits two adults comfortably, he said.
Covered with the same vinyl material as the spa covers or a choice of heavy-duty cloth, the bean bags are popular additions to family rooms, play rooms and theater rooms, Warren said.
Folks who enjoy playing video games also like the bean bags, standing them up on end to create form-fitting seating while playing the games, he said. He even allows customers to supply their own material if they don't want to choose from the variety he offers. Like the spa covers, the bean bags can be custom-designed to the customers' specifications.
The bags are double lined — an inner lining protects the beans, or in some cases, the Memory Foam.
Unlike spa covers, which keep his shop humming year round, the bean bags are a seasonal product. Manufacturing begins this summer for Christmas.
