HELVENSVALE, Australia — Korbyn Horomona at age 4, is swimming distances that most children her age are not even walking yet. At age three, Korbyn swam 1600 meters, possibly making her the world's youngest child to swim more than 1.5 km.
Korbyn is from the Helensvale Ward, Gold Coast Australia Stake, and her swimming lessons started when she was 2. Her parents wanted her to swim for safety reasons.
Korbyn's swimming coach, Terry Gulliver, first alerted her parents to her outstanding skills and predicted that she would be capable of swimming 1000 meters, as another very young girl at their pool did three years ago.
Korbyn began working up to this goal. She would alternate between freestyle and backstroke, flipping from her tummy to her back, to make the going easier during laps.
On the day she achieved the record, everyone in the pool was cheering her on as she came into her last lap of the 1000 meters. She reached the end of the pool, and then turned around and just kept going. She continued this swim until she swam an incredible 1600 meters. Korbyn kept up the pace for 90 minutes.
