"Sarkozy will have to prove himself a strong leader, indeed, to get France back on the road to becoming the power it deserves to be." So states your editorial "A bold French choice" (May 8) in which you reiterate the worn-out argument that Americans should have a legitimate ax to grind with the current French government because of our differences over the war in Iraq, but should now fully embrace the newly elected French President Nicolas Sarkozy because he has expressed "admiration for the United States."

It would be good to remind ourselves of the significant role France played in bringing about our own independence in the Revolutionary War. It might be even more appropriate to consider which of the current field of presidential candidates in our country can "prove himself a strong leader" to get the United States "back on the road to becoming the power it deserves to be."

The French people have made a choice with their vote to make a change in their path to peace and prosperity. May the citizens of America have the courage to do the same thing.
