Henry Vander Veur Dad/Opa Hendrik Vander Veur, age 85, returned to his Heavenly Father Saturday, May 26, 2007. Henry was born on March 28, 1922 in Utrecht, Netherlands. He was the third of four children of Frederik and Reinje (Reitsema) Vander Veur. In his youth he had a great love for soccer, baseball, speed skating and many other sports. He was an avid scouter with fond memories of the 1937 World Jamboree held in the Netherlands. In his late teens he met, courted and married the love of his life Anna Catherina Emo. Henry and Ann were married May 12, 1943, during the German occupation of Holland, World War II. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. In October 1948 they immigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, with three small children. They ultimately had eleven children. They came to America to be sealed as an eternal family in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Henry was a barber starting at age 14. He cut hair for 71 years, even as recently as eight weeks ago. He had a great love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and served in many church callings including the Bishopric, President of the Temple View Stake Mission, High Priest Group Leader and as a Temple worker in the Salt Lake Temple. Henry and Ann returned to their homeland in 1986, serving 18 months as full-time missionaries. He enjoyed family and friends and had a great sense of humor. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit. He loved all sports, particularly the Utah Jazz and especially looked forward to his weekly fishing trips with his sons, family and friends. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Harry Vander Veur, and sisters Feikina DeJunker-Schipaanboord and Bargonda (Gonny) Dissel. He is survived by his loving wife Ann, their eleven children Frederik, Martin (Kathy), Reinje (Benj) Rains, Henry Jr. (Margia), John (Bonnie), Raymond (Mary), Grant (Linda), Alida (Lyle) Harbertson, Andy (Kellie), Annette (Dave) Cook, and Karen Keele. He is also survived by 52 grandchildren, 82 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Friday June 1, 2007, at 11:00 am at the Canyon View Stake Center, 9119 South 1300 East, Sandy, Utah. Viewing will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2007 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Memorial Estates Mortuary 3115 East 7800 South and at the Canyon View ward prior to the funeral on Friday, June 1 from 9:00 to 10:30 am. Interment will be at Memorial Estates, 6500 South Redwood Road, Taylorsville, Utah. Ann is grateful for the loving support of family, neighbors and friends as Henry's health declined.
