Vera J. Thompson 1923 ~ 2007 Vera Jeffers Thompson, 84 returned to her Heavenly Father, June 3, 2007. She was born February 5, 1923 to Jay Clifford Jeffers and Martha "Violet" Williamson in Milford, Utah. She married George Hunt Thompson March 18, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 58 years. Vera is survived by her husband and five children; three daughters and two sons, Georgia Lynne Strickling, Herriman; Vera-Ellen T. (Darrell) Anderson, Layton; David Lloyd (Melanie) Thompson, Fort Wayne, Indiana; Julie Annette Neve, Tampa, Florida; George Jeffers (Kay) Thompson, Kearns. She also has 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother Jay Williamson Jeffers of Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William; two sisters Katie Marie, and Edith Jane Jeffers; one grandson Jay Andrew Thompson and a son-in-law Henry Douglas Strickling. Vera was educated in Milford, Utah moving with her family Salt Lake City, Utah when she was 16. She graduated from East High School and then worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Company as a supervisor. She joined the Marines in 1941 as soon as she turned 18 and worked in the Paymaster Division and was extremely proud of being a lady Marine. She graduated from B.Y.U. in 1952, with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. She was a member of the Valkyries (women warriors) club while at BYU. She spent the next 32 years teaching 2nd and 3rd grade. Her first year was with the Tooele School District teaching in Wendover, Utah and the next 31 years teaching in the Salt Lake City School District with Mountain View, Riley, Ensign and Nibley Park Elementary Schools as some of her assignments. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa. A very talented artist and crafter Vera did beadwork, ceramics, sewing, weaving, drawing and painting. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and was a talented conversationalist. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, most recently in the Branch at St Joseph Villa. For many years she was in the Douglas Ward and the Butler 5th Ward, where she served in many callings. She enjoyed traveling and she and her husband and family covered 49 of the 50 states and traveled abroad. She loved being on the road and meeting new people. Visitation will be Monday, June 11th from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 12th. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 12:00 noon in the Larkin Mortuary Chapel, 260 E. South Temple Salt Lake City, Utah. Burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery 1342 E. 5th South Salt Lake City, Utah. She will have full military honors. She will be greatly missed.
