A grand jury has amended the federal charges against a Salt Lake filmmaker accused of traveling for purposes of sex with a minor.
Gilbert Louis Medina, 38, was arrested in October 2006 on one count of transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and one count of travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.
Medina was later released but was taken into custody in early June after officials learned he had been communicating over the Internet with witnesses.
Following deliberations Wednesday, a grand jury dropped the charge of travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and added one count of tampering with a witness, according to federal court documents.
The maximum penalty for the new charge is 10 years in prison. The possible penalty for the transportation charge is five to 30 years in prison.
Medina's trial will begin Aug. 27 before Judge Ted Stewart. Medina has been ordered to remain in prison until then.
