Derek Sweeten (Beloved Son) FRUIT HEIGHTS- Derek Owen Sweeten, our precious son, brother, uncle and friend, passed away June 18, 2007 at his home and into the waiting arms of our dear Savior, after a valiant battle with congestive heart failure. Derek was born August 25, 1964 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the eldest son of Mary Sweeten Maughan and the late Owen Raymond Sweeten. Derek attended schools in Centerville, Utah and graduated from Viewmont High School in 1983. Derek was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a full time mission for the Church in the Tampa-Florida mission, 1985-1987. He was employed by the University of Utah at the time of his death. Derek was an angel in our midst and exemplified Christ-like service in everything that he did. He faced many challenges in his life but those were overshadowed by his willingness to help and give comfort and support to those around him. He loved his Heavenly Father and served him with joy and obedience. Derek's smile filled all of the rainy days in our lives with sunshine and we felt joy and happiness when he was present. All who knew Derek loved him and his passing leaves a void in our hearts that will never be filled. He is survived by his mother, Mary Maughan; step father Gerald Maughan; two brothers, Blake (Julie) Sweeten and Michael (Kari) Sweeten; several uncles, aunts and many cousins, nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by his father Owen Raymond Sweeten, his grandparents Louise and Ernest Helton, and Mary and Colin Sweeten, Sr. Funeral services will be held Sat., June 23 at 11 a.m. at the Fruit Heights 2nd Ward Chapel, 901 South Mountain Rd., Fruit Heights.
