Through 36 rounds of the 2007 First-Year Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, ten players with Utah ties have been selected.
Jordan High's Garrett Nash was selected by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the draft on Thursday, making him the third-highest position player ever taken from the state of Utah. Pine View's Ryan Bowers was taken in the third round (77th pick overall) by the New York Mets in the 1995 draft.
Cottonwood's Tanner Robles, who was expected to be taken in the first five rounds, was finally taken in the 14th round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Friday.
Weber High's Cole Abbott was tabbed by the New York Mets in the 25th round.
A total of five Div. I players were taken, led by former Spanish Fork and current UCLA righthander Tyson Brummett, Brummet, who is 10-5 for the Bruins this year, was selected by the Phillies in the seventh round, while San Diego State's Steven Hirschfeld, who graduated from Grand Co. High School in Moab, was taken in the ninth round by the Minnesota Twins.
BYU's Leon Johnson was taken in the 10th round by the Cubs, while teammates Jesse Craig and J.D. Stambaugh were taken by the Reds (17th round) and the Phillies (25th round), respectively.
Johnson has been selected a total of four times with the first three coming from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2003, 2004 and 2006. In 2006 he was serving a mission for the LDS Church.
Craig, whose wife is expecting twins in August, informed several teams earlier in the week to not select him. He was the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year.
Stambaugh, a lefty, had 24 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings for the Cougars last season.
BYU's Collin Fanning and Utah's Jay Brossman were taken four picks apart in the 36th round. Fanning was taken by the Cardinals (1097th overall) and Brossman (1101st overall).
