After reading Kim Shinkoskey's letter (Readers' Forum, Sept. 14) I felt compelled to respond. Kim said, "Ambassador Crocker neglected to mention that the United States was fighting for independence and democratic republicanism on its own."

The reason he didn't mention it is because it isn't true. In the winter of 1776, Benjamin Franklin traveled to France. His efforts there resulted in French supplies, money and — eventually — ships and men. Thanks in part to the French, we eventually won our independence.

Just as France came to our aid in 1776, we came to the aid of Iraq. As a matter of fact, the United States of America, comes to the aid of many countries. It's in our nature.
