REVS ACQUIRE ALBRIGHT: The New England Revolution acquired U.S. international defender Chris Albright from the Los Angeles Galaxy on Friday in exchange for allocation money.

Albright, 29, is a 10-year MLS veteran who has also made 22 appearances for the U.S. national team, including at the 2006 World Cup.

U.S. BEATS SWEDEN 2-0: Landon Donovan and Eddie Robinson scored to give the United States a 2-0 victory over Sweden in an exhibition game Saturday night in Carson, Calif.

Donovan converted a penalty kick in the 48th minute after Sweden's Mattias Bjarsmyr fouled Josmer Altidore from behind in the penalty area.

MAN U KEEPS LEAGUE LEAD: Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo scored late goals for Manchester United, which beat Reading 2-0 on Saturday and stayed in first place in the Premier League.

Arsenal kept pace with the Red Devils with a 3-0 win at London rival Fulham behind two goals from Emmanuel Adebayor.

PHELPS SCORES 2 WINS: Michael Phelps opened the Olympic year with two victories at the Southern California Grand Prix, swimming his best times in the 100- and 500-yard freestyles Saturday night in Long Beach, Calif.

The six-time Olympic gold medalist won the 100 in 41.93 seconds, lowering his own meet record set last year at the Belmont Plaza indoor pool. Phelps beat a field that included Olympic sprinter Jason Lezak.

Later, Phelps stretched out in the 500 free, winning in 4:10.43, again faster than he swam a year ago at this meet.

UFC

PENN WINS LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: BJ Penn won the vacant UFC lightweight belt in his third attempt, breezing past a bloody Joe Stevenson in the second round Saturday night in Newcastle, England.

The Hawaiian mixed martial arts star, who picked up the welterweight title in 2004, joins Randy Couture as the only two-division champions in UFC history.

PROMMEGGER WINS SNOWBOARD EVENT: Andreas Prommegger and Nicolien Sauerbreij won parallel giant slalom races in the snowboard World Cup on Saturday in La Molina, Spain.

Prommegger outpaced fellow Austrian Anton Unterkofler to win the third of eight parallel giant slalom races this season. American snowboarder Tyler Jewell was faster than Marc Iselin of Switzerland over their two runs for third.

Defending World Cup champions Jacqui Cooper of Australia and Steve Omischl of Canada won aerials events Saturday night in light snow and intermittent wind at the Olympic Jumping Complex in Lake Placid, N.Y.
