South Salt Lake police identified the man shot and killed by police on Wednesday as Ron E. Larsen, 53.
Officers were called to an active domestic violence situation at 3100 South Washington Street (240 West) about 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday. When they arrived, Larsen stepped onto the porch, brandished a handgun and then fired at the officers, said South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller.
One officer was standing in the middle of the street approaching the house and the other just to the north of the residence, he said.
The officers returned fire, striking Larsen who died a short time later at a local hospital. The officers remained Thursday on standard paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Salt Lake District Attorney.
Larsen had a history of violent outbursts, according to court documents.
In 1997, a former wife living in Davis County filed a protective order on behalf of her children against the man. "He has a very mean temper and will also throw things. He has thrown things at myself while we were married," the woman wrote.
