Just out are a book, music CD and DVD documentary based on the photography project "Reflections of Christ," by Mark Mabry. The release coincides with the exhibit of the same name, which runs through Nov. 7 at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.
Mabry, a Latter-day Saint who lives in Mesa, Ariz., re-created and photographed a series of scenes from the Savior's life using actors. The coffee-table book, which retails for $25.95, contains images of those scenes, accompanied by scriptural references.
In the preface, Mabry gives the history behind his project. He writes, "My invitation with this book is for people to think about Jesus. To think about His humble life, but then step back and think about the ascended Christ — the resurrected Christ — the one who still watches over us, who pleads for us now and forever."
"Reflections of Christ" is published by Reflections Media Group, an imprint of Deseret Book.
The CD, "Reflections of Christ — Hymns of Our Savior," which retails for $16.98, has 12 tracks, including "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," "Amazing Grace" and "Be Still, My Soul." Mabry had identified some of the music he wanted to accompany his exhibit, so he asked composer-pianist Clyde Bawden and producer Jason Barney to help.
Some of the songs are Bawden on piano only; others add cello or vocals by Alex Boye, Freddie Ashby, Melynda Brimhall, Catherine Papworth, Theresa and Lindsey Alston, and Brandon Brown.
For the DVD, which retails for $16.99, videographer Cameron Trejo accompanied Mabry on all the photo shoots to document the process. The main feature is a behind-the-scenes look at how and where the images were photographed and how the music fit in. Among the locations were Superior, Maricopa and Arivaca in Arizona, and Rocky Point, Mexico.
The extras are a "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" slideshow and mini-documentary about the project's music.
