The Utah Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Radiation Control has honored students from Centennial Middle School and South Jordan Middle School in its 2009 National Radon Poster Contest.
Centennial student Emma Sorensen took first place honors, while the same school's Taite Haynes took second. Third place went to Courtney Morgan of South Jordan Middle School.
The posters, submitted by students ages 9 to 14 from eight schools, looked at the dangers of radon, where it comes from, how it gets into homes and how residents can test their homes for the invisible, radioactive gas. The state winners and first-place winner's school each received a cash award. The winning posters will now compete in Washington, D.C., and the national winner, a teacher and a parent will get an all-expense paid trip there to receive the award.
