The revelation known as "The Word of Wisdom" (Doctrine and Covenants 89) was given through the Prophet Joseph Smith on Feb. 27, 1833, "for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion," according to verse 1.
A hundred years later, in celebration of the centennial of the revelation, President Heber J. Grant gave a message in the Feb. 25, 1933, Church News: "I have much pleasure in stating that in my opinion this revelation is one of the most outstanding messages which the Lord has ever given to His people — for their benefit not only from the standpoint of health but also for their financial and spiritual advancement. ...
"We must not forget that it was given one hundred years ago and that the force and wisdom of the advice has since been fully demonstrated by scientific investigations, and that not a single weak point in it has ever been discovered."
