I attended famed primatologist Jane Goodall's lecture at Abravanel Hall. It's amazing she remains so positive when discussing all the vexing environmental dilemmas the world faces. In almost every stress on the planet — deforestation, fresh water loss, fishery collapse, air pollution, peak oil, mineral depletion, topsoil loss, the disappearance of wildlife habit, global warming, territory war and all the rest — the underlying cause is too many humans wanting an ever bigger slice of the pie.

Fortunately, the tide is turning. Even in Third World countries family size is dropping. Education seems to be the key element in this paradigm shift. I'm pleased that locally The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints not only continues to discourage materialistic overconsumption but also no longer encourages members to have as many children as possible.
