As stated in the Readers' Forum recently, the cost of freedom is high. But it is not always the willingness to die for one's country. It also involves "eternal vigilance," meaning being informed and active in the pursuit of the public good, not just the "national interest." It means telling civil servants they're wrong when they're wrong.
As John Adams said, "The preservation of liberty depends upon the intellectual and moral character of the people" not jingoistic catchphrases that turn responsibility over to the military.
