A Utah businessman entered guilty pleas this week for collecting but failing to remit sales tax over a one-year period.

Craig A. Rosenvall, 54, entered the pleas as part of an agreement with the Utah Attorney General's Office that calls for the dismissal of charges if he complies with all of the conditions sought by prosecutors.

Rosenvall was the former owner of Armadillo Brothers and Master Repair. According to the Utah State Tax Commission, he admitted to collecting sales taxes but then failed to remit them from April 2004 until April 2005.

"It's critical that individuals and businesses pay their fair share of state income taxes and collected sales taxes," said Charlie Roberts, spokesman for the state Tax Commission. "These taxes directly support education and other basic public services throughout the state."

Rosenvall has paid $181,715 to the state and has agreed to pay an additional $123,255 in past state income- and sales-tax obligations over the next three years. The agreement also calls for three years' probation and requires that he perform 200 hours of community service.
