Shooting puts man in hospital
OGDEN — Gunfire from one vehicle put one man in the hospital late Friday night.
The shooting happened on the 600 block of 7th Street just before 11 p.m. Friday, said Ogden Police Lt. Mike Ashment.
Someone inside a Dodge Durango fired about six shots at a group inside a Cadillac Escalade, hitting the driver in the shoulder. The driver of the Cadillac turned off the street and into an apartment complex, where he apparently lost consciousness and crashed into a number of parked cars, police said.
The driver was taken to Ogden Regional Medical Center for surgery. He is expected to live.
The victim, whose age was not immediately available, has refused to cooperate with investigators, Ashment said. Police believe the shooting was gang-related, and there are reports of an altercation between the two vehicles earlier in the day.

Police arrest man in theft of computers
OREM — Police have arrested a man they say stole two computers from an elementary school under the guise that he was a computer repairman from the school district.
Orem police say the man entered Sharon Elementary, 525 N, 400 East, on Jan. 26, identified himself as an employee of the Alpine School District and said he needed to check on the school's computers.
School was in session, but the school librarian was out attending a district meeting, according to a police affidavit filed in 4th District Court.
The man left about 45 minutes later, and the next day the librarian confirmed there were two Apple computers missing, police wrote in the report.
The same man returned Thursday morning, and school officials called the resource officer assigned to the school.
The man again told the school employees he was from the district and gave the name of a real district worker, police said. However, when he noticed there were people in the library, he asked if he could come back another time.
When pressed about why he was there, the man said he was there to see his daughter, gave a false name and grade, and then left, according to the affidavit.
School officials provided a clothing description and a license plate, which allowed officers to stop the man soon after, police said.
Police say the man is a computer repairman and has previous arrests for computer thefts. He was booked into jail for investigation of theft and trespassing on school property on $10,000 cash or bond bail.

Woman jailed in attempted burglary
LEHI — A would-be prescription drug burglar didn't know anyone was watching her break into a friend's house until the police found her at her workplace the next day.Police say the woman had entered a home near 500 W. 1200 North in Lehi trying to find medications but failed to realize the homeowner's 16-year-old daughter was home, according to a police affidavit.
The girl thought the person who came in was another family member but got nervous when she didn't hear any talking, police say. The girl saw a female leave the back of their home and walk down the driveway and get into a vehicle, police say.
The girl told police the woman was an old friend of her mother, but the mother said they hadn't been close for years and that the woman didn't have permission to be in the home, according to the affidavit.
The officer wrote that he was aware that the woman has struggled with prescription drugs and believed she was there for that reason. However, the officer and the homeowner were unable to determine if anything was missing, according to the affidavit.
The 48-year-old Lehi woman, when confronted at her work, told officers she had entered the home to try to find medication to help her calm down and deal with her "bad morning," the report says. She was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of burglary on $5,000 cash or bond bail.

Attorneys seek new trial for murderer
WEST JORDAN — Defense attorneys are seeking a new trial for a man convicted of murder and sexual assault after learning that a juror failed to tell the court she had been the victim of a rape.
A judge questioned Juror 25 Friday in 3rd District Court. The woman says she did not mean to mislead anyone or hide the assault, which occurred when she was 15. She says the incident was not reported to police and she does not consider herself a victim.
The incident was disclosed during jury deliberations in the July 2008 trial of Parley Jeffs Dutson.
Duston was convicted of two first-degree felonies for the April 2007 death of his girlfriend.
Defense attorneys say the omission amounts to misconduct and Dutson should get a new trial.
Another hearing on the issue is scheduled for May 4.
Woman critical after collision with rig
SANDY — A Cottonwood Heights woman is in critical condition after her car collided with a parked semitrailer on 1300 East near 9000 South about 6 a.m. Saturday.
Sandy Police Sgt. Victor Quezada said the 26-year-old woman was traveling about 45 mph in a Dodge Neon when the car drifted into the trailer. The force of the impact propelled the woman's car another 97 feet down the road and somehow ejected the engine from the car's frame.
Quezada said the semitrailer was parked legally, and police do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved.
The airbag in the vehicle deployed, but the woman wasn't wearing a seat belt, Quezada said.
