The March newsletter of the church's Utah Salt Lake City Area Sports committee discusses rules, including traditional sports like basketball and softball, and nontraditional sports, like futsal and ultimate.

"One of the best ways to maintain good sportsmanship at church sports events is to make sure that everyone — referees, coaches, players and fans — is aware of the official rules that are followed for that particular sport," the newsletter reads. "Misunderstanding occurs when an individual is familiar with one set of rules (perhaps college or professional play) and a call is made that is different than is expected because church sports is using a different set of rules."

For example, basketball leagues of all ages in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints use high school rules.

The newsletter also lists nontraditional activities that could be used as local church sports, including five-a-side indoor soccer, pickleball and ultimate. "Pickleball (similar to badminton and tennis) is becoming very popular among active senior adults at community centers and is growing in popularity on high school and college campuses."

The calendar for the next few months includes a free softball clinic (with a date change to April 18) and a free basketball officials camp in June. See the schedule.
