RIVERTON — A toddler was flown to the hospital in critical condition Tuesday after being run over by a truck outside his Riverton home.
Paramedics and police received the call just before 4 p.m. and responded to the home near 11800 South and 2200 West.
The 18-month-old boy was run over and suffered traumatic injuries, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Jason Johnson said.
"We think he went under the truck to get a toy and the boy's uncle didn't know the boy was even outside while he was moving his car," Johnson said. "The family is obviously very shook up."
The sheriff's office believes the boy had followed his grandmother outside without her noticing moments before the accident. The boy then went to retrieve a plastic toy under the truck, and the uncle pulled forward and immediately could tell he had run something over, Johnson said.
The boy was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center in critical condition.
Johnson said that the incident is being investigated but appears to be just a tragic accident.
