PROVO — Logan was in a unique situation going into the finals of the 3A boys state tennis tournament Saturday afternoon. The Grizzlies had already locked up the state title, but still came away with singles and doubles titles to give them a total of 20 team points.

Juan Diego finished a distant second with 12 and Park City third with nine points.

Logan's championship wasn't a huge surprise given that the Grizzlies finished tied for second last year with Park City and returned most of their team.

"We only lost one player from last year's team, so I felt strong coming back this year," said Logan coach Dave Reynolds. "But the player we lost was our first singles player, so you never know. They worked hard all year long for this."

The Grizzlies' depth was superior as they had semifinalists in each of the five brackets.

Three of those semifinalists moved on to the finals.

Logan's two titles came in third singles and first doubles. Jimmy Stephens grabbed the singles title by defeating Cody Pickering of Hurricane 7-5, 6-0. Mark Hopkins and Jordan Ballam defended last year's doubles title by downing Daniel Crump and Jantsen Roney of Wasatch in a tough three-set match 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4. Hopkins and Ballam were down 4-3 in the final set before rallying for the win.

Jordan Lyden won the first boys singles title ever in Desert Hills' short history as he defeated Logan's Alex Daines 6-4, 6-1.

"I knew it would be tough coming in, but I just tried to stay confident," said Lyden shortly after his teammates dumped a cooler full of ice water on him. "It feels great."

Juan Diego's Kei Hong Pei Lu won the second singles title with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Andrew Lam of Judge Memorial.

The second doubles title came from Morgan's Swish Wiscombe and Tim Wright. The duo defeated Park City's Alex Quitiquit and Caleb Wray 6-0, 6-1.
