L.D. Jacobson (Readers' Forum, May 30) questions the conservatism of Sen. Robert Bennett, emphasizing immigration as his primary measuring stick. He cites a rating by a group measuring Bennett on "Overall Immigration Reduction."
The emphasis on reducing all immigration suggests an attitude approaching xenophobia. That is not what I would classify as a "conservative" position, and I am dismayed that he can denigrate the senator's (and my) conservatism based on such an extreme position.
This is emblematic of the current trend of some in the Republican Party to embrace isolationism, protectionism, xenophobia and labeling those who don't share those positions as unbelievers.
He is entitled to believe in his positions but not to create his own definition of "conservative" and wrap himself in his self-constructed virtue.
