BOUNTIFUL — Police officers will be setting up a roadside safety and sobriety checkpoint this weekend in an effort to remove impaired drivers from the roadways, reduce the incidence of driving accidents and raise public awareness.
Saturday evening through early Sunday morning, Bountiful police will be running a checkpoint at the intersection of 500 West and 500 South in Bountiful.
"Last fall that was the first one we'd done in quite a while, but it's something we're going to try and do more of," Bountiful Police Lt. Sol Oberg said. "We're using the same location just because it's centralized to our city and there was a lot of success."
Oberg said the police department is making a priority of reducing and preventing accidents.
"Our bottom line is the safety of the community and this is just an initiative to help with that," Oberg said. "Education goes a long way, too, so even people who aren't drinking see that we're out enforcing these laws and I think that helps."
