The head of the FBI's Salt Lake City field office is leaving Utah.
Special agent-in-charge Tim Fuhrman has been tapped to lead the bureau's office in Mobile, Ala. Fuhrman has worked in that field office in the past as a supervisor and assistant special agent-in-charge, said FBI spokesman Juan Becerra.
"He likes the area and had the opportunity to go, and he did," Becerra said.
Fuhrman arrived in Utah in April 2005 to lead the largest geographical division in the FBI, which also encompasses Idaho and Montana.
During his tenure in Salt Lake City, Fuhrman has overseen or been involved in many high-profile cases, including the manhunt for Fundamentalist LDS Church leader Warren Jeffs; the investigation into the 2006 murder of 5-year-old Salt Lake resident Destiny Norton; and allegations of fraud against Utah businessman Rick Koerber.
Becerra said his boss has made a point of encouraging cooperation between the FBI and state and local law enforcement agencies in Idaho, Montana and Utah. Fuhrman also has focused on building strong relationships with media organizations in those states.
"I think he's succeeded in both of those areas," Becerra said.
An acting special agent-in-charge will fill Fuhrman's post temporarily until a permanent replacement is selected by FBI Director Robert Mueller, Becerra said.
