The Scofield and New Harmony fires adjudicate the premise that inmates are running the asylum. We lost half of Yellowstone for several decades to scorched earth. Several years ago a Kolob fire could have been put out with a shovel but ended up costing us a quarter of a million dollars to contain.

How many animals did we cremate and how many habitats did we destroy?

Let's return to a fire-singed Smokey Bear whose motto was "Only you can prevent forest fires."
