SALT LAKE CITY — First-term Salt Lake City Councilman JT Martin has been named council chairman for 2010.

Council members unanimously supported Martin, a small-business owner who represents the Foothill and Yalecrest neighborhoods, for the position Tuesday.

The chairmanship is a time-consuming position, council members say, but comes with the opportunity to shape the council's agenda for the year, a power that can keep some prospective ordinances and legislative efforts from ever seeing daylight.

"Just add a few hundred extra minutes to your cell-phone plan," joked Councilman Carlton Christensen, who served as chairman during 2009.

Councilwoman Jill Remington Love, who represents the Liberty Wells and Central City neighborhoods, was unanimously selected as the council's vice chairwoman during a straw poll.
