This book is a collection of essays on a variety of gospel topics, the titular essay being the first. England explains that it is by participating in our wards and stakes, in what may seem to be very mundane ways, that we truly come to understand the gospel. He explains this by telling of his experiences as a branch president, that took him from an abstract understanding of gospel principles as a graduate student at Stanford to the very real problems of members of a rural branch in the mid-west, people that he probably would never have taken the time to get to know otherwise but had to because he was magnifying his church calling.
