Floyd Everett Haupt, 89, of Provo, Utah, returned to Heaven to spend eternity with his beloved wife, Marian Knighton Haupt, on December 11, 2010. Floyd passed away in Springville, Utah of complications from an aortic aneurysm.Floyd was born in Tucson, Arizona on Christmas Day, December 25, 1920 to Carl Henry and Ruth Tucker Haupt. He was the eldest of nine children. Floyd entered the University of Arizona in 1938, but completing his education was delayed by military service in World War II. A navigator on a B-24, he flew 50 combat missions over Europe and was awarded a rare Certificate of Valor. After the war, Floyd returned to the University of Arizona and completed his B.S. and M.S. degrees in mathematics. He married Marian Knighton on June 12, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple, and their faithful union brought seven children into the world. Floyd spent most of his career on the math faculty at BYU. In 1960 he was the first faculty member to program a digital computer. He enjoyed teaching early computer science courses at the university and felt he had contributed to the growth of the software industry in Utah Valley. Floyd is survived by his children: Ruth Ellen Homer, Lois Ito, Joyce Neilson, Carl Haupt, Robert Haupt, and Patty Peterson; his siblings Barbara Johnson, Carl Haupt, Marjorie Donaldson, Carol Sinclair, Dave Haupt, and Jim Haupt; 24 grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Floyd was preceded in death by his wife Marian; son James; brother Don; his unnamed brother who died at birth, and his great-granddaughter Marian Berry. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 18, 2010 at the Hobble Creek 2nd Ward Chapel, 1440 East 900 South, Springville, UT. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Friday evening from 6 until 8 and at the church Saturday from 11:30-12:45 p.m. prior to services.
