DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Dutch sprinters Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Femke Heemskerk finished 1-2 in the 100-meter freestyle Friday at the short-course world championships.
Natalie Coughlin of the United States was third. Coughlin won the 100-meter backstroke on Thursday.
Kromowidjojo clocked a championship-record 51.45 seconds in the four-lap race.
Kromowidjojo and Heemskerk were part of the Dutch squad that won gold in the 400 freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and last year's long-course worlds in Rome.
They also finished 1-2 in the 100 free at the European short-course championships three weeks ago.
"Kromowidjojo was in a class of her own," Heemskerk said. "She did great and I am the best of the rest."
Other women's winners included Alexianne Castel of France in the 200 backstroke and Therese Alshammar of Sweden in the 50 butterfly.
Naoya Tomita of Japan beat world record-holder Daniel Gyurta of Hungary in the men's 200 breaststroke. Paul Biedermann of Germany won the 400 free in 3:37.06 — more than four seconds off his world record last year when high-tech bodysuits were permitted.
Later, Ryan Lochte will aim for his third consecutive individual gold in the 200 individual medley. Olympic champion Cesar Cielo will face Frederick Bousquet of France in the 50 free.
